SNL’s Colin Jost mocks Will Smith’s Oscar slapping ban as daughter Willow stars with Camila Cabello

Weekend Update’s Colin Jost called out Will Smith’s 10-year Oscar ban for slapping comedian Chris Rock on stage and even joked about the now infamous GI Jane gag that prompted the assault – moments ahead of Willow Smith performing with singer Camila Cabello this week on Saturday Night Live.

Smith – Will and Jada’s only daughter – joined musical guest Camila Cabello for a rendition of their song “Psychofreak” on the show which made fun of Smith’s slap for a week straight.

Jost mentioned the ten-yeah ban on Will Smith from attending the awards show, but wondered if that actually hurt the Best Actor winner.

“As punishment for slapping Chris Rock, the Academy banned Will Smith from attending the Oscars for 10 years, but… is that punishment?” Jost asked.

“He can still be nominated and even win an award,” he continued. He can even attend an after-party. He just doesn’t need to attend the four o’clock ceremony where someone will definitely make fun of his wife again.

Jost then said, “I think a real punishment would be getting Will Smith to host the Oscars next year.”

Then, referencing his 2018 Emmys hosting effort with Michael Che, Jost joked, “Because trust me, nothing will make you question your choices in life more than hosting an awards show. “

Later on Weekend Update, Jost moved on to discuss Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s appearance at last Sunday night’s Grammy Awards and snapped another photo of the famous slap.

“Zelensky did a televised speech at Sunday’s Grammy Awards,” Jost said. “It was a heartfelt and passionate plea to help the people of Ukraine, but I missed the opportunity for a legendary GI Jane joke.”

Smith has now infamously slapped comedian Chris Rock after he made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith’s baldness, saying, “GI Jane 2, can’t wait to see it!”

After all the jokes, a guitar-wielding Willow — complete with her own shaved head she’s been sporting for the past few weeks — sang and strummed during Cabello’s second musical performance of the night.

Pinkett-Smith suffers from alopecia, which leaves her with problems with hair loss.

Smith, 53, said on Friday he accepted his punishment from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences – imposed in response to hitting Chris Rock on stage during the ceremony.

It was the second week in a row that Saturday Night Live devoted material to the Oscars incident.

In his opening monologue last week, comedian Jerrod Carmichael said, “If it was Monday, you wouldn’t shut me up about it… It’s been six days.” Doesn’t it feel like it happened years ago?

“On Friday I made a vow to myself. I promised myself never to talk about it again,” the comedian said of the slapping incident before noting that the SNL crew wanted him to talk about it.

Carmichael then used his platform to send a message to former President Barack Obama, saying he was needed more than ever.

“You have given us all hope and change,” Carmichael said. “Unfortunately, I have news for your Barack.

“I think you’re going to have to talk about it. The nation needs to heal.

The comedian also joked about how the slap drama was ruining his recent outing on his HBO special as he wanted to enjoy life as a gay man in New York, but instead has to use his time on SNL to talk about the ‘incident.

Despite Carmichael’s reservations, SNL wasted no time in evoking the slap in the face with a recreation of the moment, as one of the sketches featured an Oscar-winning fan boy gushing to be seated next to Smith. .

Chris Redd’s Smith happily complies with the fan’s request for a selfie but cuts him off when the audio cue plays Chris’ joke against Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Redd’s Smith then lets out a laugh, stands up and a loud slap rings out, shocking the fan, who is immediately spooked and tries to distance himself from Redd’s maniacal Smith who claims nothing happened.

As he speaks with the frightened fan, Redd echoes Smith’s words on Sunday, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth,” shouting it twice.

“I love the Oscars, man,” he shouts. “I love movies, man.”

The sketch continues with a second fan who arrives on stage and learns what happened as he and the other fan try to get away from the out of control Smith.

Smith’s jokes didn’t stop there, as SNL continued in their Weekend Update segment where Michael Che and Colin Jost made a volley of jokes about the incident.

The duo joked about Smith appearing to laugh at Rock’s jokes until Jada “gave him that look” and mocked Rock – who has a non-verbal learning disability – for holding each other. hands behind his back as Smith approached him, clearly angry at the joke.

They also pointed out that Smith’s resignation from the Academy would put him on the same list as other outcasts – Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein and Roman Polanski – whom they dubbed “Bad Boys for Life”, referring to the latest Smith’s blockbuster.

Che and Jost then brought in Kenan Thompson’s OJ Simpson to weigh in on the matter, who said he didn’t get Rock’s joke and hadn’t actually watched the Oscars.

Thompson’s OJ, however, said he believes Smith overreacted by assaulting Rock.

“I don’t mean you have rage issues, but if the glove fits you,” Thompson’s OJ joked. “Love makes you do crazy things, it seems.”
